Ipod Touch: Day One

Most of you know that I have absolutely no love for Apple. But, I've been wanting a decent mp3/video player for a while and also have wanted some way to browse sites and read email on the go. I just decided that I really didn't like the idea of effectively becoming a sharecropper for AT&T by buying an iPhone. I've made some headway on debt, so I decided to take the plunge and buy a ipod touch.

So far, my feelings are mixed. The product is well designed in pretty much every regard. The big problem is the way that Apple tries to control the way that you use the product. I was infuriated when I figured out that you cannot simply drag and drop files into the ipod from Windows Explorer. You are forced to interact with the device exclusively through itunes.

Add to it the wonky way that it likes to connect to my network and the fact that it wouldn't play well with my usb 2.0 card, I can't say that I'm overwhelmed with joy so far.

Cool. I look forward to having you show me this thing.

I feel your pain by having Apple strongarm us into using iTunes, though. You should be aware (if you aren't already) that there are lots of replacements for iTunes:

Also be aware that despite what Apple wants you to think, you *can* get your music off your iPod and back on your computer (or someone else's computer), although it will take a little effort.

Thanks for starting to blog, btw!

Yeah, my friend Joe used to use Winamp all the time for that... and he gave me several records from his iPod. Of course, I don't know the details, I just know it can be done. I've never owned one of the little things.
